Gerrit’s Baptism

Gerrit was baptized and confirmed on Saturday, June 30, 2007. Before the ordinances, Gerrit said he was excited because his sins would be washed away, and because Ethan said it was fun.

Gerrit and I got to the church early to get ready while Shannon stayed home to help direct family to the building. When she finally made it to the church, she was worried because couldn’t find us. She promised she would be there early; but then we saw her down the hall. Gerrit went to her a little faster than reverence might suggest, and seeing her blonde boy and husband in white coming toward her, Shannon imagined that this is what heaven would be like.

Grandma Peden gave the talk on baptism, directed to Gerrit and the other boy getting baptized that day. Then I got to sing a musical number. It felt a little funny to sing in front of a bunch of people wearing a white jumpsuit, but fortunately I remembered to bring some white socks so I wasn’t barefoot.

The baptism itself went smoothly, though I was a little afraid that Gerrit was going to try to swim around in the font when we were done. He managed to restrain himself, though.

There was lots of activity around the house that morning getting food ready for the lunch. Grandpa Fearnley put the smoker together to slow-cook some pork for pulled-pork sandwiches and tasty sides. Shannon always loves her dad’s southern cooking.

Following the pattern set with Ethan, we let Gerrit photograph the lunch guests.
