Some of you noticed that Logitech, my employer, announced a couple of weeks ago that it was going to do some layoffs, and expressed concern about whether I’d still have a job.
It was kind of a strange situation. I’ve been through a few layoffs in the past, but those have always been executed at the same time that they were announced. It made for a stressful couple of weeks, wondering if I’d be around to do the things my team was planning. Little glitches, like getting disconnected from the email server and being prompted for a password would make your heart skip a beat while you wondered if it was significant. I’m also a relatively new employee, so I was worried that that might put me at greater risk.
All the layoffs actually happened this morning, and I’m happy to say that I continue to be employed. Even better, all the people that I work most closely with also kept their jobs. There were a few from our office that were let go, though, which is always sad.
Further good news is that Alan (my brother who also works for Logitech) hung on to his job, too.
Thanks to everyone who expressed (or even just felt) concern!
Eric,
Glad to hear that you and Alan survived the layoffs and are still with Logitech. I’ll bet it was a quite a relief. It’s never any fun to job hunt but especially not when the unemployment rates are fairly high; and it seems that almost every company is experiencing layoffs. (I just heard that Intel let go 1,000 employees.)

Eric,
What a relief! I have no doubt that you would have landed softly in another firm even if you got the pink slip. However, it’s nice that you don’t have to worry about it.
I am in the thick of potentially laying off about 15% of our workforce. It’s not a pleasant thing from an employer’s perspective.
Hang in there. And go Cougs!
Boy my heart almost stopped. Then tears and joy of relief. So far have not heard from Alan so I appreciate your news of him too. We really are happy for both of you and your families.
Great news for two great men. Good luck in the weeks and months ahead Eric and Alan!
While the bee sting of a job loss is not fatal, it sure isn’t pleasant. I know what it feels like to go through this as I was stung with this situation myself for the first time in 23 years, 15 months ago. It hurt then but the bite heals and now the wound feels better in my newly upgraded professional life in Phoenix.
We just need to remember (though it isn’t always easy) that someone with much more knowledge than you or I has set the mortal curriculum for us to succeed. He will always provide a WAY for our WILLS.
Love, Rich
Eric,
I did not put the two together when I read Alans email yesterday but now I have, of course I am glad for you both. Having experienced a very tough year ourselves for 2008 with Richards job situation I know only to well what it means to be let go. Needless to say my company has gone thru multiple layoffs since Nov. 08 and another one this week but grateful to say I have survived each one of those but not all on my team has been as fortunate. Glad we can all say we are still working today.
Debra
Thank you for good news in troubling times. It reminds us to prepare and live providently. We knew however that you would handle any set back in stride and continue to succeed in your many roles. Grandpa Fearnley
I am glad that you kept your job eric!! They are even doing layoffs for the custodial team here! LOL Obviously not as important but I like my job and would like to keep making money!!! Miss you guys see you in a month!
I share both Eric’s regrets for our coworkers who were let go and relief that I’m still employed. As I told Eric on the phone, I was a little concerned that just a few months ago I was telling him what a great company Logitech is and he should come to work for us – and then he could be let go. I’m glad that it worked out ok for him. Oh, and I still think Logitech is a good company 😉
