The Highs and Lows of Rage

A couple of years ago, Afton’s soccer coach decided that she was just too short to play goal keeper. But because he hadn’t let her play any other position for the 8 months she had been on his team, he decided she ought to pursue playing opportunities elsewhere. That was heartbreaking, and did not lead to Rage.

Because Rage, or more precisely, Rage FC Showcase, is an annual soccer tournament held in St. George, Utah, and Afton wouldn’t be going with her now former team. We cancelled our hotel reservation and stayed home that President’s Day weekend instead. The only rage was from Bandit who doesn’t appreciate baths that much.

It turned out that not going to the tournament was a bit of a blessing, because St. George, which normally has an average high temperature of 60° in February, had a huge snowstorm and the championship games were all cancelled.

The following year, Afton joined a new team and got her first chance to play in the tournament. She played on the field rather than in goal, and helped her team win the championship for their division. That year, there was more risk of sunburn than frostbite.

This year, Afton got to play in the tournament again, back at her old position as keeper. The weather was not so pleasant, the game outcomes not as good, and her elbow was in rough shape from a sprain at a scrimmage a couple weeks prior. But it was nice to get away for a couple of days, visit with Ethan, and it was still warmer than in Lehi.

Here is a short video with some highlights. Look for Afton in easy-to-see lime green, #55.
