Wet, Cold, Snowy

Last night I had a dream that the sun had come out and melted all the snow off of my driveway. It was a nice dream. In reality, as I got ready to head out to an early church meeting this morning, I found another six inches piled on. And it was still snowing!

 Snowy House

According to the National Weather Service, December 2007 was the 4th wettest December on record for Salt Lake City. The monthly summary for January hasn’t been published yet, but I’m thinking it’s got to be in contention for the all-time record, because it seemed like it snowed no less than every other day. Ethan and Gerrit keep hoping for a snow day with cancelled school, but sorry guys, this is Utah.

Gerrit’s Tunnel

When a storm hit the area about a week ago, my boss told us all to go home (and work there) so that we could beat the worst of it. It was not a good time to be on the roads. There were white-out conditions in some places, where you were stuck with the dilemma of driving nearly blind or trying to stop somewhere with the danger that someone would rear-end you. At one point, I suddenly found myself staring right in the headlights of a truck. Fortunately we were going slowly enough that we could stop, and the other driver, after a moment of confusion, backed up and moved over onto his side of the road.

The visibility was so bad that day that Ethan walked right past our neighbor in her white van, who was waiting to drive him home from school, and trudged into the blizzard. Another neighbor rescued him before he got too far, but it will still be a good story to tell his kids if they’re ever soft about having to walk home from school.

Snow Meter Table

Today’s fresh load of snow was easily more than a foot. Fortunately some kind neighbors helped dig out the driveway when we got home from church. Aside from the snow placed there by nature, there was also a two-foot wall of snow and ice blocking the drive from the snow plow.

Groundhogs?

According to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction, we’ve still got more to go. Maybe the sun will clear my driveway in a month or so. Until then, we’ll keep shoveling, sliding and sledding. Did I mention that it’s still snowing?

  1. Now I believe Richard about the snow storm. So glad to hear that you were able to get home safe Eric and Ethan. It was snowing here Saturday morning but mostly gone in the late afternoon since it started raining. So watch out here it comes. We have also had record snow in the mountains and I hope the snow stays there and not fall on the valley floor again.
I had to climb onto the roof to take the snow off the dish so we could watch Pres Hinckley funeral. Stay warm and safe.

  2. And here I was feeling sorry for myself that I had to come back to Vancouver from Kona. At least it wasn’t necessary for me to shovel out the driveway! It has been cold (for the Portland area) but still better than what you are having. Glad everyone is ok and I’m sure the kids are enjoying at least parts of it.

  3. Hey I know what you guys are going through up here in Idaho I think we got six inches yesterday. I think we have gotten about a foot and a half this last week! I wish I could have the sun as well. Don’t worry though the summer is only like what 4 months away!!
