The monthly summary for January hasn’t been published yet, but I’m thinking it’s got to be in contention for the all-time record, because it seemed like it snowed no less than every other day. Ethan and Gerrit keep hoping for a snow day with cancelled school, but sorry guys, this is Utah.

When a storm hit the area about a week ago, my boss told us all to go home (and work there) so that we could beat the worst of it. It was not a good time to be on the roads. There were white-out conditions in some places, where you were stuck with the dilemma of driving nearly blind or trying to stop somewhere with the danger that someone would rear-end you. At one point, I suddenly found myself staring right in the headlights of a truck. Fortunately we were going slowly enough that we could stop, and the other driver, after a moment of confusion, backed up and moved over onto his side of the road.

The visibility was so bad that day that Ethan walked right past our neighbor in her white van, who was waiting to drive him home from school, and trudged into the blizzard. Another neighbor rescued him before he got too far, but it will still be a good story to tell his kids if they’re ever soft about having to walk home from school.

Today’s fresh load of snow was easily more than a foot. Fortunately some kind neighbors helped dig out the driveway when we got home from church. Aside from the snow placed there by nature, there was also a two-foot wall of snow and ice blocking the drive from the snow plow.

According to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction, we’ve still got more to go. Maybe the sun will clear my driveway in a month or so. Until then, we’ll keep shoveling, sliding and sledding.
